Blanket Loft Insulation – How Safe Is It for Your Home?
Blanket loft insulation is one of the most forms of home insulation. Blanket loft insulation materials are made of glass fibre, rock fibre or mineral fibre. They are available in DIY stores in large rolls. These materials are advisable for DIY insulation installation method as they are flame retardant and provide good protection against dampness, rotting and vermin. The rolls of blanket home insulation products are usually available in the length of 6 – 8m (20 – 25ft), width of up to 400mm or 16in, while in thickness, they may vary from 100, 150 to 200mm ( or 4, 6 to 8 inches).
How to identify blanket insulation materials?
When you visit a local DIY store to purchase blanket loft insulation materials, look for those paper backing rolls of insulation materials. Along with paper backing, these materials may also come in foil backing. Paper backing is added for prevent fibre to be torn while foil backing is added is added especially when the vapour barrier is felt needed for insulation. The vapour barrier is added to prolong the effectiveness of loft insulation that tends to reduce due to formation of condensation. Condensation is most likely around loft space of any building as warm most air rises from heated rooms to colder loft areas resulting dry rotting effects in the roof beams. In such situation, foil backing laid to the insulation forms a barrier that prevent warm moist air forming condensation around areas treated with insulation.
Preparations & Precautions required in Blanket Insulation Method
While installing blanket loft insulation one must not forget that this type of thermal insulation tends to cause somewhat discomfort especially when it comes in direct contact to skin. Glass fibre, rock fibre or mineral fibre materials of blanket insulation cause irritations in contact to installers’ skin. That’s why installers must wear long sleeve attire and long trousers along with thick work gloves that cover maximum portion of human body.
Apart from protecting your skin, you should take measures not to inhale dusts or particles of loose fill or fibre insulation materials. Wear a disposable mask on your face to prevent inhaling toxin insulation materials dusts.
Other precautions that must not be ignored are –
Always carry a torch to ensure adequate light to the loft space to avoid all types of risks.
Must sweep the area around the ceiling joists and get rid of all debris.
Seal openings which can be mostly around pipes, vents, wiring using any flexible mastic.
Now that you have prepared the loft area for laying loft insulation materials, make sure you have calculated the targeted area and cut the materials aligned to the area of the space. Lay the insulation according to the recent Building Regulations recommendations in thickness. Greater the thickness of insulation be, better form of insulation protection it forms to the targeted area.
