New Managers – Get off to a good start

The biggest problem that new managers face is trying to separate themselves from their fellow co-workers after they get promoted.  This is very difficult for anyone especially when you are a close, personal friend with some of your co-workers and now you are their boss.

Once you become a manager you should really start acting like it from day one.  You need to remove yourself from certain situations with your staff.  Yes it is hard.  You probably were very friendly with these people and now you are expected to be their supervisor.  It isn’t an easy transition.

You can still remain friends though.  Just remind your friends that at work, you are the boss and they must act appropriately.  Most of the time, your true friends will understand that things will have to change.  If they don’t, then it is time to cut ties with them as they probably weren’t that good of friends anyways if they can’t separate your personal and professional relationships.  As long as you explain this to them, they should understand.

So what happens if you have to discipline one of them?  Well this is never easy.  The best advice I can give you is to do it quickly.  Get it over with fast as bad news doesn’t get better with time.  As long as you are fair in giving out punishment, you should feel good about yourself.

Over time things will get easier as you start to separate yourself from your former co-workers.  Just be sure to remain friendly, but also draw a line so they know who is in charge.
